Back in time
A picturesque spectacle
This place is steeped in history: the city of Groningen arose, strategically located, on the northernmost part of the Hondsrug, an elevated glacial ridge of sand and clay, so that the inhabitants were relatively protected from high water and invaders. Alongside this Hondsrug the Drentse Aa river flowed towards the sea, which enabled a bustling trade. Here, at the Hoge der A and the Lage der A, the city’s first harbor arose where the resourceful Groningers constructed a low and high quay for continuous loading and unloading during ebb and flood. Until well into the 19th century, the influence of the sea was perceptible in Groningen. Today the canals and associated quays create a rich public space for locals and visitors.. The historic warehouses and ships provide a picturesque spectacle.
The origins
June 30, 2008 is the last day before a national law prohibiting smoking in the hospitality industry took force, and at the same time the first day for Café De Sigaar. Inherently an authentic and vibrant establishment, where quality and hospitality are paramount.
