About us

The intimate establishment

Everyone has their own idea of a brown café: often old-fashioned with a homely interior, brown beers, brown furniture including brown curtains from the smoke. De Sigaar is a brown café with the allure of a grand café and is characterized by the homely establishment.

An authentic brown cafe with allure

Above the entrance, the Balinese mask repels evil spirits and vapors. Once inside, one can safely linger at the bar and ‘regulars table’ or under the imposing chandelier, which once enriched the interior of Hotel Schiller in Amsterdam. This feast of light is flanked by two beautiful stained-glass designs by glass masters Ballast and Bonekamp. The entire café exhibits specially crafted nostalgic paintings by Olga Wiese on the theme of “ land, sea and air’’.

Our own beer

Our own brewed Sigaar Blond and Miss Blanche Witbier flow from the taps, specially brewed for us and Hotel Miss Blanche: a fresh and floral Belgian white beer with a hint of elderflower. And then there are the wines that Wijn van Jurjen has selected especially for us.

Our food and drinks

Whether it is a generous breakfast after a satisfying night in Groningen, a fragrant cup of coffee or fresh tea while reading the newspaper at our regulars table, lunch or dinner; Café De Sigaar’s menu offers something for every moment of the day.

Café classics such as hamburgers, a lunch tasting but also a delicious piece of salmon. There is plenty of choice, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Naturally, our menu features a wide variety of drinks, which are perfect alongside snacks such as bitterballen or local cheese.

Our paintings and their story

Miss Blanche is shown sitting on an elephant in Africa, where she is accompanied by a circus performer who deliberately does not hold the parasol over her head. In the foreground the elephant’s owner with trunk hook, on his head a knotted West African cotton cloth. With cigar, of course.

The painting on the back wall shows the zeppelin “the Hindenburg” waving goodbye as it begins its journey around the world’s largest cities. The zeppelin itself is moored to the ceiling on some days, at other times it makes the trip around the world of yesteryear.

In the Arctic, Miss Blanche with a tambourine and lifebuoy amuses herself, sitting on an ice floe. Together with her jukebox orchestra of monkeys in sailor suits, she plays a merry tune. This to the great amusement of the orcas. On the horizon, the zeppelin is passing through.
